The short version: we count breaths, not people.

What we collect

  • When you take the pledge. A member number (the next number in line), a secret code that stays in your browser, and, if you came through an invite link, the number of the member who invited you. We keep the secret code only as a one-way scramble (a hash), so nobody at the Club can read it. We do not ask for your name.
  • Each breath you finish. One small message, a “breath ping”, with five things: your member number, your own calendar day, the minute the breath was taken (UTC), a random code your phone makes up for that breath so that a repeat is never counted twice, and the name of the breathing technique you used (one of: sigh, long exhale, slow, box, hum), so that we can later see which techniques people choose. Nothing else: no location, no device details. We use it to count how many breaths the Club took in the last 24 hours. We count at most 30 breaths per member per hour. If your phone is offline, it keeps the ping in its own storage (together with your member number and secret) and sends it when the network is back, for up to 48 hours.
  • Your email, only if you type it into the founding members form. If you are a member in that browser, the email is linked to your member number. We use that link for one thing: to give you your number back if you lose it (we email you a one-time link). Without a member number in the browser, the email is stored on its own list, not linked to anything.
  • A daily reminder, only if you turn it on. The notification address and keys your browser gives us (they let your phone’s push service, run by Apple, Google or Mozilla, deliver one message to your device), the time of day you chose, your language, and your member number. We use them to send your reminder and for nothing else. Turning the reminder off deletes them. The push service sees that a message is sent to your device. It does not see who you are.
  • A recovery link. When you ask for one, we store a one-way scramble (a hash) of the link’s code for 30 minutes. The link works once.
  • A moment, if you choose one. The “When I ___, I take one deep breath” line you pick or write stays on your device only (in your browser’s local storage). It is never sent to us.
  • A language request. The name of the language, and how many people asked for it. We store the language, not you.
  • On your own device. Your member number, your secret code, your streak and the day you last breathed, in your browser’s local storage. That is not a cookie and it never leaves your device except to prove who you are when you take today’s breath. Clear your site data and it is gone.

What we never do

  • We never sell your data. We never share it or pass it on. The only message we send is the one you asked for: a reminder, or a recovery link.
  • No trackers. No ads. No analytics. No tracking pixels. No third-party scripts, fonts or images.
  • No cookies.
  • We do not store IP addresses or browser details. Like every website, our host (Cloudflare) has to see an address to send you the page. We do not write it to our database. For a short abuse limit it is scrambled into a key that is not stored.

Your email

If you join the founding members list, we write only about the Club: when it opens new chapters, and the recovery link if you ask for it. We write from daniel@breathingclub.com. Every message about the Club will have a one-step way to leave the list.

The code will be published

We will publish the code of this site, so that anyone can check that what is written here is what it does.

Wellness, not medicine

The Breathing Club is for wellness. Nothing here is medical advice, and nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition.
